myLot Discussions| Calypso to ROFL to | | My mom is from Grenada. There is an old calypso song that gets played at pretty much every gathering of my mom's family, and it always makes me chuckle. I found the lyrics to it online, so I share it with you below. I just wish I could get my hands on the record, I'd play it all the time! http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/t/the_merrymen/big_bamboo.htmlThe Merrymen
big bamboo lyricsMoney in the hand is the Yankee dollar bill
Money in the hand is the Yankee dollar bill
Money in the hand is the Yankee dollar bill
Money in the hand is the Yankee dollar bill
Oh, with the big, big bamboo, bamboo
O la la la la la la la la la
Working for the Yankee dollarWell I asked my lady, "What should I do to make her happy and make love true?"
She said, "The only thing that I want from you is a little, little piece of a big bamboo"
With the big, big bamboo, bamboo
O la la la la la la la la la
Working for the Yankee dollarWell, I gave my lady a sugar cane

| | | true vintage calypso | | In case you want an example of what is truly vintage calypso, look for recordings by The Mighty Sparrow or Lord Kitchener (aka Kitchener) or Shadow or Valentino. These are true vintage recordings! Some people misappropriate the term vintage for any "happy" caribbean music, and it is so wrong, as I have stated in concurrence with others who feel the same here:

Working for the Yankee dollarWell, I gave my lady a sugar cane
Sweet up the sweets I did explain
She gave it back to my surprise
She liked the flavour but not the size
She wants the big, big bamboo, bamboo
O la la la la la la la la la
Working for the Yankee dollarWell, I gave my lady a coconut
She said, "I like it, it's OK but the only thing that worries me, what good are the nuts without the tree?"
I want the big, big bamboo, bamboo
O la la la la la la la la la
Working for the Yankee dollarNow I gave my lady a banana plant
She said, "I like it, it's elegant

| | What ails West Indies Cricket? | | West Indies, calypso cricketers, ruled the world in '70s. They were giant killers. Won the Prudential Cup when it started in 1975 and 1979 by beating the Australian and England Team authoritatively. Every cricket playing nation was afraid of meeting the giant. Their squad included many greats like Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge, Andy Roberts, Mich Holding and the like. They camedown to earth when they met Kapil's Devils in 1983 and beaten twice -once in league and in final. From there, downline started for West Indies and they never recovered. They are Island cricketers. What ails their cricket? Lack of promotion? Paucity of funds? or
lack of material. Can they become a cohesive and winning unit once again? Truly, they are exciting cricketers. They only showed the World what exciting and enterprising cricket is all about? | |
| | I Hate K-Earth 101 FM | | My roommate listens to K-Earth all the time. It is starting to drive me batty. The same songs all the time. Now mind you, my best friend's uncle is Otis Redding. But if I hear "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay," just one more freaking time I am going to scream my head off. I use to love that song. Then living with my roommate, I learned it, now I hate it. His niece does not play it the way that she does. I mean okay, I am all for the oldies, blast from the past type of deal. But all the time is driving me crazy. My roommate is 52, so this is her generation music. To me, it is elevator/grocery store music. I can not stand it any more. I mean they play the Beatles, Al Green, and Aretha Franklin all day long. | |
