myLot Discussions| Hot Buttered Rum | | So I was looking up some Christmas recipes (yes already!) and one of the beverages I came across is hot buttered Rum.
It looked interesting to say the least but it sounds like such a weird concoction to me. I admittedly do want to try it but I was wondering...Have any of you had the pleasure (or displeasure?) of experiencing this drink?
Do you make it at home?
If you do make it, which recipe do you use? (I found lots!)I just find the idea of pouring the hot water over the ice cream mixture so odd!
Although I did find one that was completely different, yet still called hot buttered Rum! So, any ideas people?

| | | View from Virginia City, NV | | I took this photo of the mountains while we were in Virginia City last week. Virginia City is one of the most famous old mining towns in the US, site of the famous Comstock silver strike. Now it's basically a tourist town with saloons and shops and so on. When we were there it was pretty cold, 20's Fahrenheit, with a fair amount of snow on the ground. First thing we did was hit a saloon for some hot chocolate for the children and hot buttered rum for us. They had a St. Bernard named Pondy (for Ponderosa) who had a "rum barrel" on her collar. Virginia City is at about 6200 feet elevation, so no wonder it was cold. They had a candy shop with Bit o' Honey (yum), so I stocked up. That stuff is hard to find. After that we drove home as the MIL was panicking at the thought of the clouds coming in over the Sierra Nevada. I guess she didn't want us to turn into the Donner party: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Party We made it home safe and sound though, not more than a few drops of rain and no snow. Maybe we can go back next year when it's warmer and check out the train ride. | |
| | There's no such thing as TOO MUCH BACON!! (Or is there?) | | We all know that the Atkins diet has been confirmed as non-harmful after 30 years of observing those who stuck to it. Despite what appears to be an imbalance of fats versus carbs, it has proven that it can be both balanced and healthy, providing good taste, flavor satisfaction, and hunger satiation. But, here is one guy who has taken the "ooooo - I can have more bacon" idea to its ultimate limit. For one entire month, he is eating NOTHING but bacon! That's right - no hot buttered toast, no eggs, not one cell of vegetation. Just smoked, treated BACON!!!http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/health/diet_fitness/Hmmmm_Bacon_San_Diego.htmlMaybe on a dare, I could do this. And, that is basically what his is for the most part - a stunt. But, listen to what he says about his weight and blood pressure. Even with all that salt!![em]shocked[/em]No, I don't think this is the way to go - you do need vitamins and other minerals not supplied by bacon. You do need dairy (he doesn't say if he supplements the bacon with beverage - I would assume he does). And, roughage - we all know why we need that, although for some of us, pork products tend to "go with the flow", if you catch my... | |
| | Have you ever tried French-toasting a sandwhich? | | I tried this out of the blue the other day, because I wanted something more exciting than a plain old turkey & cheese sandwhich. I beat some eggs, a pinch of salt & pepper and milk together, dipped the whole assembled sandwich in the mixture and threw it on a hot, buttered griddle pan. They turned out DELICIOUS![em]lol[/em]
The outside was cripsy and the cheese was melty, but the bread was nice and fluffy and a little richer from the egg.
| | If you don't like vegemite you probably ate it wrong! | | I have found that most people that are not from australia and that dont like vegemite have eaten it wrong. you dont have to eat much of it, it's not a spread that you use too much of, only a thin layer is enough not a whole teaspoonful on one cracker! do you like vegemite? if you dont try spreading a thin amount on hot buttered toast and see how ya go. | |
