| | Yard sale "drifters" | | Last weekend at my yard sale, we had a few "drifters" that stuck around for quite some time. They didn't buy anything, but commented about several of our items and talked to me and other shoppers. The first "drifter" was a lady who was out walking as soon as we started setting up around 6am. We only had a few boxes out and she was standing around talking to me as I tried to organize. She wasn't in the way or anything, but it was kind of odd. She commented on just about everything I was taking out. She left for a few hours and then came back again--this time she talked to customers and bought a few books.Later, another lady came walking, sweating profusely. She talked to us about how her car's air conditioning doesn't work, how she lives on the edge of town by a factory where she works. Then she asked us about our experiences as students at the college here, and somehow got off on a tangent about math classes and how she used her math class experience to make decisions regarding investing. We had nothing to say, but kindly listened with small interjections. She didn't look at many of our things, just at what was around us. When she was done talking about how... | |

| | A Musical Stroll Down Memory Lane... | | Today I sort of changed my recently new routine of checking my email and then logging on to "myLot". Instead I decided to download some music for my collection.Being in a rather nostalgic mood I downloaded "OLDIES BUT GOODIES". The point of this discussion is has anyone out there ever noticed how old tunes can send you back in time better than a time machine? Some of the memories are happy ones while others take you to a sad space and time. It is funny how today's music hasn't the same effect. In fact some of it I wish had never been produced. How do feel myLotters? Some groups in particular like the "Dramatics,The Drifters Chilites,The Begees,The Delphonics etc.; Individual artists like Gene Pitney,Carol King, and to me one of the greatest of all time was "KAREN CARPENTER" The world has really missed her. I know I certainly do. How about you and what music do you miss? a tangent about math classes and how she used her math class experience to make decisions regarding investing. We had nothing to say, but kindly listened with small interjections. She didn't look at many of our things, just at what was around us. | | Punished for being Patriots? | | Those Somalis are not pirates; those Somalis are vigilantes with a mission for the welfare of their nation! While Somalia has not a stable government, the Somalis are not stupid and definitely not ignorant when it comes to their rights! There are International laws that govern activities in the high seas inside and beyond the jurisdiction of Coastal Nations/Countries:*UNCLOS Article 101(a)(ii);UNCLOS Article 107;UNCLOS Article 228;*UNGA Resolution 44/225;UN Convention on Environmental Impact AssessmentWhile these laws are expected to be implemented by the various nations, some nations and people often exempt themselves from those portions that do not please them; such as in the case of Taiwanese Chai Ding Bong who claimed “nobody has the right to tell you what you can do in International waters.” True, people ought to be free to navigate the high seas commons (provided they are not in violations of International laws) or be free to sail any body of water (provided their flag nation is not noted for violation of International marine laws). On the other hand, International laws give coastal nations the right to claim certain portions of the high seas... | |
| | Living an Unplanned Life? | | Do we want to live an unplanned life? The Chinese have a saying for this: "Wait to eat,to sleep and to die!". People who have their lives planned out normally lead more successful lives. They are achievement-oriented and know what to focus upon at each stage of their life. They know which course to study at the university. They know what kinds of jobs they want to get into. They plan when they want to wed and when to have children. They save and they invest. And when the children grow up, they plan for the success of their children. For many of us, we do not have the benefit of wise counsel. We are drifters in life. We operate within the circumstances of what life gives us. We are under-achievers and we are somehow contented with that. If your life have been planned for you or you have been given wise counsel on what to study and what jobs to take, do you think your life would be so much better today? Do you regret what has happened in your life? Let us discuss. | |
| | comfortable | | Do you feel comfortable working or living in a city that's not your hometown?
It's about that time of year when millions of graduates start the jobs they chose. While some are able to work in their hometowns, many more graduates will be starting a new life in a new city. For numerous non Beijing natives living in Beijing, they're given an apt name: north drifters. Are you one of these drifters? If you are, tell us how you feel living far away from your hometown in another city? If you're not, tell us if you would want to work or live outside your hometown?
any idea?

| | Oral Exam my Crotch | | Oral exams, to practice foreign languages. Except when it's an oral exam in... sociology? Anyone who's tired of the Times New Roman font should be capable of sympathy, because this isn't my battle. This is everyone's battle. Sociology is the study of "people do stuff, how interesting" and these people usually (somehow) go on to become social workers (theoretically useful), sociology professors (useless), or friendless drifters who think they exist outside the realms of contemporary society and go around pestering people about the things they do from day to day to collect pointless data nobody ever does anything with (totally useless, aka me, sans the "collecting data" bit). Sociology has done a lot of good for people who make pie charts and bar graphs and also for the Chief from the Carmen SanDiego game show. It's also done a lot of good for sociologists who just want to have sexual intercourse with strange people. But how exactly does an oral exam translate from this? Well, here's how it goes. Become a professor who spends too much time on the internet until you become desperately lonely and realize you're entering your midlife crisis. Next try to urge your students to... | |
