| | Have you seen the "The Freedom Writers" movie? | | I just saw the movie last Thursday before we get deployed in our off campus teaching next week. Here's the plot of the movie I've copy-pasted from Wikipedia.=DThe storyline of the movie takes place between 1992-1995, beginning with scenes from the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Hilary Swank plays the role of Erin Gruwell, a new, excited schoolteacher who leaves the safety of her hometown, Newport Beach, to teach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, where a new integration program puts students of all backgrounds and races in classes together. Her enthusiasm quickly dwindles away when she realizes that her class (all at-risk students, also known as "unteachables") are not the happy-go-lucky eager students she was expecting. They must be forced into class by security guards and segregate themselves into racial groups in the classroom. The tension is apparent every time students from one race look at those from another. Not only does she meet opposition from her students, she also has a hard time with her department head, who believes she should focus less on teaching her students to learn and read, and more on teaching them discipline and obedience. One night, two students,... | |
| | Ex-Bush spokesman Tony Snow dies of cancer | | (i think this is where i am suppose to post this[em]sad[/em])WASHINGTON - Tony Snow, a conservative writer and commentator who cheerfully sparred with reporters in the White House briefing room during a stint as President Bush’s press secretary, has died of colon cancer, Fox News reported Saturday. Snow was 53 years old.Snow, who served as the first host of the television news program “Fox News Sunday” from 1996 to 2003, would later say that in the Bush administration he was enjoying “the most exciting, intellectually aerobic job I’m ever going to have.”Snow was working for Fox News Channel and Fox News Radio when he replaced Scott McClellan as press secretary in May 2006 during a White House shake-up. Unlike McClellan, who came to define caution and bland delivery from the White House podium, Snow was never shy about playing to the cameras.Popular figure at the podium
With a quick-from-the-lip repartee, broadcaster’s good looks and a relentlessly bright outlook — if not always a command of the facts — he became a popular figure around the country to the delight of his White House bosses. He served just 17 months as press secretary, a tenure interrupted by his... | |
| | Do you think there is a "magical amount" of nicotine to maintain the addiction? | | I know that this discussion is probably politically incorrect. The truth of the matter is I smoke cigarettes. I was watching the T.V. and they had a commercial about the "magical amount" of nicotine. It made me wonder if that is necessarily the case. I have been smoking the same brand of cigarettes since I began 12 years ago. Newport 100's. I began smoking at the age of 16. I am now 38. By the grace of god, I have had no underlining health issues. My dad was hypnotized and hasnt smoked for almost 10 years now. He smoked for over 30 years. Dont get me wrong I am not promoting smoking. I am just wondering how fellow myLotters view smoking. Live and let live. Do you smoke? How long have you smoked? How many times have you tried to quit. Please share your stories. | |
